I had the Essure procedure done about 5 years ago after a friend recommended it as a good form of birth control. The procedure itself was not too bad. When I went in to get the hysterogram to see if my tubes were blocked the doctor told me they were both blocked. Weeks later I received a call from the imaging center at the hospital stating they made a mistake during the test and one of my tubes was not blocked. I could have gotten pregnant at anytime! When I called the doctor who put the coils in and asked why she told me the tubes were blocked even though they weren’t she said she was sure she put both springs in-but one may have ‘fallen out’. She offered to put another spring in the open tube for free-but I still am not sure what happened to the other one-so ended up getting an IUD. Now I have one blocked tube and an IUD and a potentially missing spring somewhere in my body. I have since had two more scans, an ultrasound and a hysteroscopy and they can’t find the other spring. Since I have had this procedure I have had strange allergic reactions off and on that involved my lips and face swelling up two three times their normal size, once my throat was so swollen I had to go to emergency and get an EPI pen injection. I have also had strange rashes and itching all over my body. I have never had allergies before but now carry an EPI pen with me wherever I go in case the swelling starts again. I don’t know if any of these things are related to the Essure-but I also don’t think many doctors understand what the potential side effects are-so it is hard to get a straight answer from anyone. When I went to an allergist after another bout of swollen lips he just said ‘there is a lot of controversy about Essure right now.’ Where does that leave me? I hope someone comes up with some answers soon. I am tired of walking around waiting to have another allergic reaction that might be my last.
